Sumita Arora Book Exercise Solution

Que 1. What do you understand by communication?

Answer: Communication is the transfer of information from one person or device to another.

Que 2. What is networking?

Answer: Networking is the process of connecting or linking a group of devices to one another. e.g. Telephone network, Computer Network, Radio Network, Internet, etc.

Networking is needed to break the barriers of distance, time, and cost,

Que 3. What is a communication channel?

Answer: A media (wire or wireless) which is used for transferring information/messages from one device to another, is called Communication Channel.

There are two types of communication channels.

  1. Wired Media (Guided Media)
    • Twisted Pair Cables
    • Coaxial Cables
    • Fiber optic Cables
  2. Wireless Media(Unguided Media)
    • Microwave
    • Radio Wave
    • Satellite
    • Bluetooth, etc.

Que 4. Name the different types of computer networks.

Answer: There are four types of networks.

  • Personal Area Network (PAN)
  • Local Area Network (LAN)
  • Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
  • Wide Area Network (WAN)

Que 5. What is the Internet? What are its uses?

Answer: The Internet is a computer-based worldwide information network. It can be assumed as an example of WAN (Wide Area Network. The Internet is composed of a large number of smaller interconnected networks.

These networks may link tens, hundreds, or thousands of computers, enabling them to share information with each other and to share various resources, such as powerful supercomputers and databases (collection of data) of information.

Uses of the Internet:

  • Business
  • E-commerce
  • Voice and Video Conferencing
  • E-mail
  • Media and Entertainment
  • Education
  • Research and Development
  • E-shopping, etc.

Que 6. A communication network which is used by large organisations over regional, national or global area is called ____.
(a) LAN
(b) WAN
(c) MAN
(d) VAN

Answer: WAN

Que 7. Discuss the following types of networks in brief :
(i) LAN
(ii) MAN
(iii) WAN

Answer:

(i) LAN: Small computer networks that are confined to a localised area (eg., an ofice, a building or factory) are known as Local Area Networks (LANs).

The key purpose of a LAN is to serve its users in resource sharing like data, information, files, programs, printer, etc.

(ii) MAN: Metropolitan Area Networks are the networks spread over a city. For example, cable TV networks that are spread over a city, can be termed as metropolitan area networks.

The purpose of a MAN is also the sharing of hardware and software resources among its users

(iii) WAN: The networks spread across countries are known as WANs, A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a group of computers that are separated by large distances and tied together.

The WANs link computers to facilitate fast and efficient exchange of information at lesser costs and higher speeds.

Que 8. How is LAN different from WAN?

Answer: LAN vs WAN

LANWAN
Local Area NetworksWide Area Networks
Spread across the local area, up to 3 KMSpread across the countries.
FasterSlower
Owned and Managed by an Individual i.e. private network.WAN can be Public Network and Private Network.
LAN offers high bandwidth for transmission.WAN offers low bandwidth for transmission.

Que 9. Differentiate: Data, Information & Multimedia.

Answer: Data: Raw facts and figures are known as Data.

Information: The processed data or meaningful collection of data is called Information.

Multimedia: Multimedia files are documents that contain a combination of text, photographs, graphics, video, and audio.

Que 10. What do you understand by the terms WiFi and Bluetooth?

Answer: WiFi: Wi-Fi refers to Wireless Fidelity, which lets you connect to the Internet without a direct line from your PC to the ISP.

Wi-Fi protocol designates a specific frequency range (within 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) on which communication will take place on connected devices.

Bluetooth: Bluetooth is a telecommunications industry specification that describes how mobile phones computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs) can be easily interconnected using a short-range wireless connection.

Bluetooth requires that a low-cost transceiver chip be included in each device. The transceiver transmits and receives in a previously unused frequency band of 2.45 GHz that is available globally.

Que 11. What are guided and unguided media?

Answer: Guided Media: The communication media used for a wired connection are called guided media.

Unguided Media: The communication media used for wireless connection are called unguided media.

Que 12. What is cloud computing?

Answer: Cloud computing refers to storing and accessing data and programs over the Internet instead of your computer’s hard drive.

There are broadly two types of clouds one can access :
(i) Public Cloud
(ii) Private Cloud

Que 13. How are private clouds different from public clouds?

Answer:

Private CloudPublic Cloud
A private cloud consists of computing resources Used and exclusively owned by one business or organization. The public cloud refers to a common cloud service made available to multiple subscribers.
ln a private cloud, the services and infrastructure are always maintained on a private network and the hardware & software are dedicated solely to one organization. The cloud resources (like servers and storage) are owned and operated by a third-party cloud service provider and delivered over the Internet.
Examples: Microsoft Azure, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Drive, iCloud, etc.
